In the dead of winter, 1805, Father George Rapp gathered his followers together and signed papers founding the communal Harmonie Society. Historic Harmony and the Harmony Museum celebrate that signing each year with Harmoniefest, an entertaining evening with food, awards, and a bit of history.
The evening also includes a a talk by western Pennsylvania author C. Prentiss Orr. Orr is the author of The Surveyor and the Silversmith–Land Speculation on the Frontier of Western Pennsylvania. He’ll focus his presentation on the relationship of David Shields with the Harmonists and their years of incredible productivity for which they relied on Shields as their principal sales agent. Through letters, accounts, and third-party narratives, Mr. Orr will share an early picture of the Harmony Society’s successes (and challenges) working in the new world.
And we’ll award this year’s Heritage Awards and Commendations, given for outstanding efforts in historic preservation.
