SUMMARY:Cherry Pie / George Washington Hike
DESCRIPTION:CELEBRATE GEORGE WASHINGTON’S  292 BIRTHDAY WITH A HIKE AND SOME CHERRY PIE \nSLIPPERY ROCK\, Pa. – You can hike through history\, stroll through nature\, and enjoy some cherry pie on Saturday\, Feb. 24\, in honor of George Washington’s birthday\, and his 1753 journey through the region. \nHistoric Harmony is co-sponsoring this event at Jennings Environmental Education Center\, a Pennsylvania State Park at 2951 Prospect Road (Pa. 528) Slippery Rock 16057\, just south of Pa. 8.   Hikers will meet reenactors portraying Washington and his guide Christopher Gist\, as well as the American Indian the two encountered in the western Pennsylvania woods in 1753. Echoing through trees that morning will be the reenactment of the gunshot that could have ended Washington’s life when he was just 21.\nVisitors can choose from 9 guided hikes and walks. All are limited in size\, so hikers must make a reservation by February 22nd to secure a hiking spot. \nTo reserve a hiking spot\, go to reserve-cherry-pie-hike. \nThere is a $3 per person cash donation\, collected at the park\, to partake in one of the guided hikes and the cherry pie. \nPhoto Caption: \nBob Shaner of Leechburg\, Pa.\, portraying frontier guide Christopher Gist\, talks to hikers about the musket shot that almost killed 21-year-old George Washington when he traveled through western Pennsylvania in 1753. Similar reenactments will happen during history hikes scheduled for Feb. 26 at Jennings Environmental Education Center near Slippery Rock. \n

SUMMARY:Trombones on Ice
DESCRIPTION:Dozens of brass musicians will gather for a free holiday concert at the Harmony Museum’s Harmonist Barn\, 303 Mercer Road on Saturday\, November 25 from 2 – 4 p.m.  The annual concert\, called Trombones on Ice\, is jointly sponsored by the Harmony Museum and local music teachers Laura Crytzer and Bruce Lazier. \nLazier started Trombones on Ice several decades ago\, as a fun way to gather past and present students together for the joy of playing holiday favorites together.  “We’ve held the concert in Harmony the past several years\,” says Lazier. “The barn is a wonderful venue\, if the weather cooperates. The forecast for Saturday looks good\, so I think we are in luck.” \nThere is no admission\, but cash donations will be welcomed to aid in the upkeep of the barn. Attendees are asked to bring their own chairs and to dress warmly. \n \nHarmony is at I-79 exits 87-88\, about 30 miles north of Pittsburgh.  The Harmony Museum\, located at 218 Mercer Street\, sponsors many events and exhibits\, and presents the community’s extraordinary history with guided tours at 1 and 2:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.

SUMMARY:The Harmonist Connection
DESCRIPTION:FREE HARMONIST CONNECTION WEBINAR—November 15. \n           Join author Michael Strezewski for The Harmonist Connection as he presents about Christoph Weber\, Redware Potter of the Harmony Society\, on Wednesday\, November 15 at 6:00 p.m. CST/7:00 p.m. EST. The virtual presentation is in conjunction with Strezewski’s new book on the same subject. This event is free to the public but you must register to receive the link. \nRegister in advance for the free webinar to obtain the link. \nChristoph Weber was the master potter of the Harmony Society\, a German utopian group founded by religious dissenter George Rapp. Working from 1808 to 1853\, Weber made a variety of household wares such as pitchers\, storage jars\, jugs\, plates\, and mugs. Weber’s pottery was distributed among the Society’s members and sold to their neighbors. Utilizing documentary sources\, archaeological investigations\, and analysis of surviving ceramics\, Michael Strezewski\, Associate Professor of Anthropology at the University of Southern Indiana\, paints a detailed picture of Christoph Weber\, the different types of pottery he manufactured\, and his place in the early nineteenth century origins of the ceramics industry in the United States. \nMichael Strezewski is an Associate Professor of Anthropology at the University of Southern Indiana. Dr. Strezewski has directed archaeological excavations in New Harmony since 2008\, publishing numerous reports and articles on the Harmony Society. \n
